PHI Participates in the Asian Winter Games
A 46 man delegation made up 29 athletes, a 6 man medical team, and coaches & officials participated in the 8th Asian Winter Games in Sapporo, Japan from February 19-26. The Pinoys competed in 4 sports- ice hockey (25 atheltes), figure skating (2 men, 2 women), short track speed skating (1), and snowboarding (1).
One of the highlights of the trip was the Team Welcome ceremony where Team PHI met Ms. Emi Watanabe, a figure skater and Japanese Olympian, who is half Filipino. She was eager t o get in touch with her heritage by meeting and welcoming the Filipino participants.
Gina Calaguas, Secretariat Head and Acting Chef de Mission was happy to report, “Our hockey team got a bronze in the Division II category and skater Michael Martinez finished 9th against a world class field made up of athletes from Japan, China, and Korea. Despite coming from a tropical country, Team PHI performed at its best.”
