Perez, Delos Santos and Ando bring Home Luggage Full of Medals

Elien Rose Perez is closely following the footsteps of Olympic silver medalist Hidilyn Diaz.

The 19-year-old from Tagbilaran City recently won three gold medals in the 2017 Asian Senior Cup-Asian Inter-Club Weightlifting Championships at Yongha Weightlifting Gymnasium in Yanggu, South Korea.

Perez proved superior against Sanju Chaudhary of Nepal in the women’s 53kg division of the Asian Cup, lifting 71kg in the snatch and 87kg in the clean and jerk to assemble 158kg in the total.

Besides those three golds, the criminology major from University of Bohol grabbed three silver medals in the Asian Inter-Club after Korean Park Da Ae topped their category by carrying 75kg and 96kg respectively in the snatch and clean and jerk.

“Masaya ako at nakapag-uwi ako ng mga gintong medalya para sa ating bansa,’’ said Perez. “Lalo ko pang pagbubutihin sa mga susunod na tournaments,’’ she added.

Cebuana Elreen Ann Ando and Maria Dessa Delos Santos also went home with a luggage full of medals after bagging three silver and three bronze medals each.

Ando, who wound fifth in the Asian Indoor Martial Arts Games in Turkmenistan, had a combined lift of 198kg (85kg in the snatch and 113kg in the clean and jerk) in the women’s 63kg of the inter-club. She took three bronzes in the Asian Cup.

Delos Santos, Diaz’s understudy who also comes from Zamboanga City, lifted 81kg in the snatch and 96kg in the clean and jerk for a 177kg total and three silvers in the women’s 58kg division of the inter-club behind the golden effort of Uzbekistan’s Nabieva Muattar, who carried a total of 197kg.

The 18-year-old Delos Santos also got three bronze medals in the Asian Cup.

The Filipino lady lifters placed third overall behind Uzbekistan and South Korea during the prestigious tournament where over 100 weightlifters participated.
