The Philippine Olympic Committee recently got a huge financial boost from the MVP Sports Foundation, San Miguel Corporation and the Philippine Basketball Association.
POC officials, led by its president Ricky Vargas and chairman Bambol Tolentino, received a total donation of P46 million for Filipino athletes to flourish in international tournaments.
MVPSF and SMC donated P20 million each while the pro league gave P6 million to the POC as part of the national athletes’ training for the coming Asian Games in Indonesia and the 2019 Southeast Asian Games the country will be hosting.
“I’d like to thank with gratitude the PBA for its contribution, San Miguel Corporation and MVPSF,’’ said Vargas. “These are all directed towards the athletes, towards the NSAs (national sports associations) for the programs for the Asian Games and SEA Games.’’
The turnover was made during the halftime of the PBA Commissioner’s Cup game between Barangay Ginebra and TNT Katropa at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Vargas and Tolentino were on hand to receive the financial support from the PBA board, which is also being chaired by Vargas. All 12 teams contributed P500,000 each for the cause.
“We are very thankful for all these contributions. Para sa atleta, para sa bayan, para sa programa,’’ said Vargas.
