Ten additional athletes are set to be submitted for accreditation by the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) Secretariat to the Indonesia Asian Games Organizing Committee (INASGOC) to compete in the 18th Asian Games in Palembang and Jakarta starting August 18 up to September 2.

The 10 athletes include track and field athletes Cristina Knot, Janrey Ubas, Anfernee Lopena, Clinton Clark Bautista and Francis Medina along with weightlifters Eireen Ann Ando, Maria Dessa Delos Santos, Ellen Rose Perez and Jeffrey Garcia. Completing the list is downhill cycling rider Leah Belgira.

Belgira’s inclusion to compete in the mountainbike downhill event was requested by the Indonesian Asian Games organizers due to lack of participants on the event.

This brings to 279 the total number of athletes in the Philippine delegation to the quadrennial Asian Games along with 38 coaches.  The Philippines competed in 2014 with a total of 159 athletes in 25 sports winning only 1 gold, 3 silvers and 11 bronzes for a total of 15 medals.

The total number of track and field players to the Asian Games now reached 13 while weightlifting had now with seven headed by Rio Olympic silver medalist Hidilyn Diaz. Cycling had a total of six riders including 2014 Asian Games lone gold medalist Daniel Caluag.

This is the second biggest delegation the Philippines has ever assembled next to its delegation sent in the staging of the 1988 Bangkok Asian Games.

The Philippines won only one gold medal in the last Asian Games held in Incheon, South Korea courtesy of BMX rider Daniel Patrick Caluag.

Philippine sports officials are optimistic of a better medal performance in the Asian Games this time.
